Netflix is one of the best media services out there for genre content. As the streaming competition continues to heat up, the streaming platform is consistently producing and providing great programming. Science fictions fans are pretty lucky that there are plenty of great series for them to stream on Netflix today.

While some of these series are originally created by Netflix themselves, others have been bought by outside companies such as the BBC or CBS. Either way, we’re now taking a look at 10 of the best sci-fi series on Netflix right now that you cans watch.

BLACK MIRROR

After originally airing on Channel 4 in the UK, this sci-fi anthology quickly became popular worldwide. Now, Netflix has added an even more global appeal by exclusively producing the series now. Written by Charlie Brooker, the show usually attempts to choose a specific thing about our society to explore.

Whether it’s lifelike politicians, apps on your phone, or the concept of life after death, the show has attempted to demonstrate what could happen in the far future, if we’re not careful. It’s brilliantly written and usually a pretty tense viewing experience.

LOST IN SPACE

The reboot of the 1965 series had a lot of people talking when it first landed on Netflix. The second season is set to be released soon, but the first has shown that these kinds of films could very much get a second life in a series form.

The family adventure has taken viewers into deep space and it’s just as tense as our previous entry. There’s nothing quite like this show on TV and the production values are incredible. This may also be a show that could help get new fans into the sci-fi genre.

 LIVING WITH YOURSELF

The Paul Rudd comedy series about a clone has already had rave reviews. The combination of Rudd, Aisling Bea and Rudd again has gone down really well with audiences. This unique concept has certainly added something very different to the streaming platform.

The filming of the show was clearly complicated as Rudd had to act against himself for most of it. It follows our lead after he is cloned to remove any of the bad aspects about him. The original copy is not killed as intended, with chaos ensuing!

STRANGER THINGS

Half fantasy, half sci-fi, the kids from Hawkins have actually helped Netflix gain a lot of subscribers. It’s fair to say that this is one of the brand’s premium series because of just how good the story telling really is. It’s perfect for Halloween and brings together sci-fi nerds as well as horror geeks.

The incredibly popular series benefits greatly from the retro vibe. It’s setting and time period choices make it even more terrifying in some ways, without modern technology to help our heroes in a crisis. We can’t wait for season 4 as the last 3 have been absolute hits.

UMBRELLA ACADEMY

The series based on a graphic novel may have been initially popular because of the great source material. However, it was a brave decision for Netflix to adapt something that isn’t necessarily well known to the general public.

What was delivered was by far one of the best comic book series to date. It may have learned the lessons of some of their other shows and certainly didn’t hold back on the more sci-fi elements of the property, including of course an incredibly intelligent monkey.

STAR TREK

The Trek universe has to be one of the best sci-fi worlds ever created. Luckily for science fiction fans there is almost always a series of the award winning show on Netflix. Currently the animated series and Enterprise are still on the streaming platform.

While shows like Discovery are available worldwide, often the Trek series can be found on CBS in the US. Therefore, when there is one on Netflix its worth going back in time, or rather, to the future and living in this amazing world of space exploration.

SENSE8

This show didn’t last too long with Netflix, but it built up a cult following very quickly. The series was excellent at bringing forward underrepresented individuals and included a number of science fiction elements that made it extremely compelling.

These eight individuals are emotionally and spiritually linked. Once they have come together they have a lot of questions that need answering. The show definitely has the potential to be revived at some point, but we recommend going back to watch the first few series.

THE 100

The popular CW series has found a second home on Netflix in the US. The post apocalyptic show looks like it should have a high budget, but has managed to set itself apart compared to other shows of a similar genre.

While it is coming to an end very soon, after seven series, there’s plenty here for new fans to digest and get obsessed with. Because of the amount of episodes, this is a great show to get sucked into. The series looks at humans who have returned to Earth after a nuclear disaster.

THE OA

Unfortunately, this is another show that has been subjected to the cull by Netflix. While the writers of the series had hoped they’d have 5 seasons to really work through the story they were instead limited to only 2, being cancelled without any warning.

This may be bad for some viewers as the conclusion isn’t what it could have been, there’s so much potential here that it’s worth checking out what was produced. The series follows a young woman who reappears after she’d been missing for some time; she was supposedly in another dimension.

ALTERED CARBON

This series reminded many viewers of Blade Runner when they first started to watch it. This futuristic series is dark, gritty and not exactly the Earth we’d like to live on in a few hundred years. A well crafted mystery is at the center of this show though.

Featuring people that can essentially change bodies when they die, this is a detective case about a murder in a futuristic landscape. We know we are getting a season 2 with an even more spectacular cast including Anthony Mackie, so Netflix is all in on this incredibly science fiction show.
