Introduced into the world of Breaking Bad in season 2’s appropriately titled episode Better Call Saul, shady attorney Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) didn’t waste much time in becoming a fan favorite supporting character on the show, with many fans predicting that he might eventually get a spinoff long before it actually happened. But happen it did, with Better Call Saul quickly establishing itself as a worthy companion series to the Emmy magnet that spawned it, with much of that credit of course going to Odenkirk’s portrayal of the titular character.
That said, despite the title, Better Call Saul doesn’t technically star Saul Goodman, instead focusing on his prior identity of Jimmy McGill. While already sometimes exhibiting the traits that would come to define Walter White’s faithful “criminal lawyer,” Better Call Saul’s Jimmy still mostly operates on the right side of the law, and is at least trying to carve out an ethical career for himself. Unfortunately, one of the biggest obstacles to him doing that has turned out to be his older brother Chuck (Michael McKean). Chuck feels that Jimmy is a poor excuse for a lawyer, and will never cease being the conman he spent much of his youth as.
As fans will no doubt recall, season 2 of Better Call Saul ended with the reveal that Chuck had secretly recorded Jimmy admitting to a felony, following Jimmy tricking Chuck into making an idiot out of himself in front of a judge. While Jimmy’s intentions were arguably noble – and spurred by his love for Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn), it’s doubtful that Chuck will change his mind and decide to let Jimmy off easy. What Jimmy admitted to could very likely get him disbarred, if not outright imprisoned. If AMC’s newly released poster art for Better Call Saul season 3 is any indication, the latter scenario may very well come true. Check it out below.
If Jimmy does indeed up behind bars for a crime that serious, one wonders how that might impact his future law career, and whether or not it will serve as the tipping point event that sends Jimmy over into full Saul Goodman mode. Odenkirk has said that Better Call Saul season 3 will offer fans their first look at the Saul identity, so such an outcome wouldn’t be entirely unexpected.
Another big question is whether Kim will stick by Jimmy during a potential prison stint, as she has made it clear that she doesn’t approve of Jimmy’s law-skirting methods, despite her personal affection for him. Plus, with the two now operating out of the same office, Jimmy getting arrested could very well lead to Kim’s reputation getting dragged through the mud too. Either way, Jimmy isn’t in for an easy road ahead.
