Netflix releases the Between Two Ferns: The Movie trailer. Directed by Scott Aukerman, the mockumentary is based on the original series hosted by Zach Galifianakis. Featuring numerous celebrity appearances, Between Two Ferns: The Movie was produced by Funny or Die, and co-written by Aukerman and Galifianakis.

In the original Between Two Ferns web series, Galifianakis interviews celebrity guests. The production design is minimal, in the style of a public access program. In this case, the titular ferns function as the primary production design. For the comedic premise, Galifianakis uses wordplay to blatantly confuse celebrity guests, and often takes a direct approach with his line of questioning. The series was created by B.J. Porter and the aforementioned Aukerman, the latter of whom created and hosted the TV series Comedy Bang! Bang! In Between Two Ferns: The Movie, Galifianakis’ interview program is discovered by Funny or Die co-founder Will Ferrell, and then subsequently mocked by viewers. As a result, the disgraced host hits the road to prove his critics wrong. Between Two Ferns: The Movie features Netflix actors Lauren Lapkus (Orange Is the New Black) and Paul Rust (Love).

Netflix released a trailer for Between Two Ferns: The Movie. The clip begins with an interview sequence in which Galifianakis low-key insults Matthew McConaughey, who is then presumably killed by a freak accident, or is at least “momentarily dead” according to producer Ferrell. Hoping for more visibility, Galifianakis demands a network talk show, primarily because he “deserves it” for being a straight white man. During the trailer’s middle section, Galifianakis fails miserably when attempting to pronounce Benedict Cumberbatch’s name, and takes a passive-aggressive approach when interviewing Brie Larson. Jon Hamm - described as a “hot idiot” by Galifianakis - also makes an appearance, and doesn’t flinch when he’s mistakenly identified as Bradley Cooper. By the final half, the Between Two Ferns: The Movie trailer incorporates some traditional road movie comedy, which sets the tone for David Letterman’s inquisition about the program’s “pathology.” Unsurprisingly, Galifianakis delivers one of his classic annoyed/confused facial expressions, which caps off the clip’s collective dry humor. Check out the trailer and poster for Between Two Ferns: The Movie below.

In pop culture, Galifianakis is mostly known for portraying Alan Garner in The Hangover movie trilogy. Over the past decade, he’s evolved into a versatile comedic performer, delivering critically acclaimed performances in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and the FX series Baskets.

Comedy fans will be pleased to see Funny or Die incorporated into Between Two Ferns: The Movie’s trailer. Co-created by Ferrell and Adam McKay (along with Mark Kvamme and Chris Hench), the humor website benefited greatly from Between Two Ferns segments. Now that Ferrell and McKay have officially parted ways as creative collaborators under Gary Sanchez Productions, perhaps Between Two Ferns: The Movie will inspire new creative projects between Ferrell, Galifianakis, and Netflix’s young crop of comedic performers.
