Between Two Ferns: The Movie images reveal a first look at the two ferns. The new comedic film from comedian Zach Galifianakis and director Scott Aukerman has its roots in the low-budget Funny or Die interview series that began back in 2008.
For the uninitiated, the 22-episode series – officially known as Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis - focused on a different celebrity interview each episode. The often improvisational series offered Galifianakis playing a heightened version of himself, complete with deadpan delivery and beyond rude treatment of his guests. Since premiering over a decade ago, the series has taken on a cult status, creating some hilarious standout moments, such as Brad Pitt spitting his gum into Galifianakis’ face after the host asked “Do you think people focus maybe too much on your looks and don’t even, you know, realize that you’re just a s*****y actor?” The stripped down, public access look and feel of the series was intentional, with Galifianakis and guest seated in chairs, between two ferns.
Though it hasn’t been widely publicized throughout its production, Galifianakis and Aukerman have indeed teamed up once more to create a feature length film based on the series. Between Two Ferns: The Movie will drop September 20 on Netflix, and now, thanks to Vulture, some new production images have arrived, with an official shot of the film’s star ferns looking healthy and robust. Check out all the new images below. In addition to the photos, Aukerman has also revealed that the film “cries out” for a sequel. Said the director:
The improvised film will likely feature a host of celebrity cameos, but when asked about exactly which stars will turn up in Between Two Ferns, Aukerman was reluctant to say much. What he did confirm is that comedy great David Letterman will appear in the film, and that this alone was a huge deal to Aukerman. Apparently, however, both Letterman and Funny or Die co-founder Will Ferrell will make appearances, and their appearances tie into the plot in a significant way. At present there isn’t much known about the plot, but what we do know is that because of the film’s improvisational style, it wasn’t an easy shoot, and Aukerman’s rough paragraphs on what was to happen and where made for much adjusting and alteration throughout production.
But yeah, I think the great part about the world that we’ve set up is, yeah, it could continue if we wanted it to. And honestly, some of the ideas we originally went into thinking we were going to do on this movie we were unable to pull off quite yet, so it sort of cries out for a sequel just so we could use some of those ideas.
As far as deadpan comedians go, Galifianakis is one of the best currently working. His ability to never break character even when asking the most absurd or offensive of questions to his guests has helped to make Between Two Ferns what it is. The new film surely won’t be any different in that sense, and fans of the series can bet that when Between Two Ferns: The Movie premieres on Netflix later this September, there will be many hilarious surprises in store.
