For 12 seasons, we’ve seen the gang of The Big Bang Theory go through it all. We’ve seen Howard’s mom pass away unexpectedly. We witnessed Sheldon’s inability to connect to another human being change over the years, leading him to marry his one true love. And we’ve been there as guys like Stuart face adversity and start over when life wasn’t always fair to them.

Let’s take a look at 10 moments in The Big Bang Theory that really tugged on our heartstrings. Some of us may have even shed a tear or two.

THE FIRST TIME SHELDON TOLD AMY HE LOVED HER

After years of dating, Amy and Sheldon were moving at a snail’s pace. Amy was ready for the next physical step in their relationship but she respected Sheldon’s boundaries and wanted to know if Sheldon could at least picture any intimacy happening between them.

During the gang’s adult prom night, the thought of going “all the way” with Amy scared Sheldon. Instead of moving that far in their relationship, Sheldon ended up telling Amy he loved her. This came as a shock to both Amy and the audience. Who knew that such an emotionless man could have such large feelings.

THE MOMENT HOWARD FOUND OUT HIS MOM DIED

In the eighth season, the unthinkable happened. While Debbie (Howard’s mom) was visiting her family in Florida, she died in her sleep. As her only son — and someone who was incredibly dependent on his mother — this devastated Howard. In fact, it devastated the whole group because she was such a big part of their lives. She was always cooking for the gang and took Stuart in when he had nowhere else to go. Losing her was a real emotional turning point in Howard’s life.

WHEN AMY BROKE UP WITH SHELDON

In the episode “The Commitment Determination,” our hearts were torn from our chests — Amy broke up with Sheldon. Granted, she said she needed a break from Sheldon, but when Sheldon didn’t understand the terms of this so-called “break,” he went a little crazy and couldn’t leave her alone.

It infuriated Amy that Sheldon couldn’t respect her space. She decided to officially end it and it caused a huge divide in the group. Amy was now a core member of the gang and one of Bernadette and Penny’s best friends. The thought of this perfectly imperfect couple no longer being together was too much to bear.

WHEN ARTHUR DIED AND WE SAW A NEW SIDE TO SHELDON

After meeting Professor Proton (aka, Arthur Jeffries) at a local pharmacy, Sheldon and Leonard really hit it off with him. They all had a mutual love for science despite their huge age gap. Sadly for Sheldon, Arthur preferred the company of Leonard to him, but Arthur was still a role model in Sheldon’s life.

In the episode The Proton Transmogrification," the gang finds out that Arthur passed away. Due to Sheldon sometimes acting like a 7-year-old, Leonard was nervous how Sheldon would take the news. And while he acted normal on the outside, on the inside he was crushed. He had dreams of Arthur during his nap and when he woke up, he hugged Leonard with all his might. The touching moment between the two friends crushed veiwers.

WHEN STUART’S COMIC BOOK STORE BURNED TO A CRISP

Nothing was more heartbreaking than seeing Stuart’s comic book store burn down. This was a local getaway for the group, a place to go when they were both happy and sad. And since the guys were always at the comic book store, we got to know Stuart on a deeper level as he became friends with Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj.

As if things couldn’t get worse for Stuart, when his comic book store burned down, the insurance company thought he did it on purpose, which hurt him financially.

WHEN LEONARD AND PENNY GOT MARRIED IN FRONT OF THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY

When Leonard and Penny got married in Vegas without their friends or family around, fans (and their friends) were stunned. Was this really the dream wedding these two waited so long to have? Nevertheless, the two were married and didn’t seem to have any regrets.

Years later, Penny learns that Leonard’s mom was hurt that she wasn’t invited to their wedding and didn’t even know about it until afterward. To make it up to her and everyone else, Penny and Leonard decide to have a second wedding for all their friends and family. It was an adorable ceremony and exactly what we should have gotten the first time around.

WHEN SHELDON READ HOWARD’S DAD’S LETTER WHEN REORGANIZING HIS CLOSET

Due to Sheldon’s OCD, he decides to clean and re-organize Howard and Bernadette’s closet when the gang was over having dinner. Howard and Bernadette loved their new closet and didn’t understand why Sheldon loved doing it so much. Their tunes changed, however, when Sheldon revealed that he read some secret letters in their closet. As it turns out, there was a letter to Howard from his dad that he received when he was 18 years old. Howard never read it because he always hated the man who abandoned him and his mom, and now that Sheldon knew what was in the letter, it made everything worse. Thankfully, the group found a way to tell Howard what was in the letter without hurting him anymore.

WHEN WE FOUND OUT BERNADETTE WAS PREGNANT FOR THE FIRST TIME

Howard and Bernadette weren’t necessarily trying for kids when she got pregnant. They did finally agree to have children after Bernadette was on the fence for years but no one knew it was coming.

When the two lovers were getting ready to take a dip in their hot tub, they found a baby rabbit in the water. The two saved him and named him Valentino. While Howard ran inside, Bernadette told Valentino that she would tell Howard she was pregnant another night. Fans went wild for the possibility of the first baby in the group.

WHEN SHELDON FINALLY PROPOSED TO AMY

Sheldon and Amy were dating for over five years before they finally had “coitus.” Amy has always had a love for Sheldon and that love deepened after the two got back together following their short break. But when Amy moves to New Jersey for a few months for work, Sheldon realizes what life is like without Amy again. When a former graduate student kisses him, he heads directly to the airport where he buys a ticket and flies to see Amy Farrah Fowler and proposes to her on the spot. Fans went wild, Amy was in shock, and Sheldon was never more determined to keep Amy in his life.

AND WHEN THEY SAID “I DO”

Once Sheldon finally proposed to Amy, fans couldn’t wait for the wedding. Unlike Leonard and Penny’s first wedding, Shamy was going to plan their wedding meticulously. And unlike Howard and Bernadette’s wedding, Sheldon and Amy were giving themselves time to plan the perfect day. We saw Amy’s swan-like dress, we met Sheldon’s brother, we saw Leonard and Sheldon’s parents mingle (wink, wink)… It was an episode to never forget. When the two finally said “I do,” fans felt satisfied with how the series turned out.
