Sheldon’s (Jim Parsons) The Big Bang Theory ending may have been teased as early as season 7. The popular sitcom only has seven episodes left before going off of the air after 12 seasons, and fans are trying to predict what the endgame will look like for the Pasadena gang. At this point, everyone’s future is still up in the air, with very little indication about what lies for them in the finale. That is, except Sheldon and Amy (Mayim Bialik), who are still in the running for the Nobel Prize in Physics nomination for their work on Super Asymmetry.
Much of Sheldon’s professional life revolved around his goal of becoming a Nobel Prize awardee. Over the course of the last decade, he’s tried several times to develop something that might actually be worthy of the accolade, but nothing ever came to fruition until he unexpectedly teamed-up with Amy. The major breakthrough for the paper came minutes before they got married, and after their honeymoon they quickly dove back in developing the study. Things haven’t been exactly smooth with the reveal that there had been a Russian scientist from several decades ago who already debunked the theory, but they got past that and published the paper. Now, the Coopers are working hard in campaigning to get the nod they so want from the Nobel committee.
This would certainly be a satisfying end to Sheldon’s story on The Big Bang Theory, although it’s one that dedicated viewers will have long seen coming; Shamy winning the Prize would fit what a fortune teller told Sheldon about his future back in season 7. “The Anything Can Happen Recurrence”, episode 21 of the 2013/14 season saw Penny (Kaley Cuoco) bring Sheldon to a psychic for a session. During that time, he and Amy were going through a rough patch (that led to a temporary break-up a season later). The clairvoyant told him that “he should give himself to this relationship. Once he does, all his other pursuits will come into focus… personally and professionally. Everything will fall into place once you commit to her.” Always a skeptic, Sheldon called the whole thing “malarkey,” but five years later, there seems to have merit to the fortune teller’s words.
Sheldon looked quite dumbfounded with what the fortune teller said - as if he was seriously contemplating it before storming out. Of course, with his life entirely rooted in science, it’s expected that Sheldon will never admit subscribing to this notion, ever. But what if this specific encounter stuck with him and since then, he’s been operating with this prediction at the back of his head? We know that he was already planning to propose to Amy before they broke up, even having a ring ready for her, and in later seasons, he has been increasingly sensitive about her feelings. This is not to say that he’s not genuinely in love with his wife, it’s just that the prophecy might’ve been the reinforcement he needed to decide on marrying Amy.
Assuming that the fortune teller’s words hold true, Sheldon and Amy’s The Big Bang Theory ending may already be set. While the campaign for the Nobel Prize is ongoing, they’re sure to get at least the nomination for Super Asymmetry and, if the showrunners are generous, they might even win the whole thing. Between getting the accolade he’s worked for all his life and Amy potentially already pregnant, The Big Bang Theory could leave the genius but socially inept theoretical physicist living his best life - all made possible because of Amy.
