Things are going to get awkward this October, as the new trailer for Big Mouth season 3 delivers a premiere date along with the show’s acclaimed pubescent laughs. The Emmy-nominated adult animation series from Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Jennifer Flackett, and Mark Levin is set to return to the most confusing time in everyone’s lives (except tax season, perhaps), following the misadventures of a group of teens as they go through all the embarrassing, infuriating, and sometimes enlightening aspects of puberty, guided by their respective hormone monsters Maury and Connie.
The series debuted on Netflix in 2017, and has since become one of the streaming giant’s best offerings — animated or otherwise — combining absurdly lewd and coarse humor with a surprising sincerity and frankness that makes its content both relatable and something viewers would want to avoid watching with their parents. Add to that the terrific voice talent that includes Kroll, John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas, Jenny Slate, Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, Richard Kind, and more, and it’s easy to see why Netflix recently renewed the series through season 6.

Where the overstimulated teens will be by the time season 6 rolls around is anyone’s guess, but as the new trailer demonstrates, there’s really no shortage of content when you’re dealing with the myriad changes that happen to the mind and body when in the grip of puberty. The new season looks as though it’s going to continue along much the same path as seasons past, while addressing the other significant changes the characters have experienced over the past two seasons. Case in point: Jay’s bisexuality and Missy’s increased confidence in herself and the degree to which she knows what she wants. Then there’s Coach Steve, the pitiable wretch whose obliviousness is likely the only thing keeping him going at this point. Coach Steve has been through the wringer in seasons 1 and 2, so in season 3 it’s only fitting he get a little help. In a bit of Netflix corporate synergy, Steve gets a makeover (or complete overhaul) from the Queer Eye guys, though it sounds as if Jonathan has his doubts over whether or not the new Fab Five can work their magic with this one.
In all, the (NSFW) trailer brings the same sort of humor — both cringe-inducing and laugh-out-loud — as the first two seasons. There’s plenty here to keep audiences entertained until the new season drops in October.
