Bill & Ted Face the Music star Alex Winter took to Twitter this morning to express his thoughts on one designer’s take on a LEGO set dedicated to the 1989 classic. The original film, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, follows Ted Logan and Bill S. Preston, Esq., two San Dimas teenagers, as they travel through time to meet different historical figures and gather information for their school project. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter star as the two bumbling high school students.
The sequel, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, was released in 1991, and over the years, the franchise has become a cult hit of the comedy genre. Love for the series is only growing, and Bill and Ted have been making headlines once again with the release of Bill & Ted Face the Music coming later this year. The new installment is set for an August 21st release and although we haven’t had a glimpse at a trailer yet, images and plot details have started to surface over the past few months. The story focuses on the two leads as middle-aged dads who must save the planet by writing a killer song. Despite having not seen any footage from the actual movie, fans have been treated to images of Reeves and Winters as the two title characters, along with some promotion during the Super Bowl as well.
Excitement for more Bill and Ted continues to build, and now there is even a LEGO set of the San Dimas mall being proposed on the Lego Ideas website. Alex Winter only fueled the fire this morning by sharing the proposal and tweeting “Co-sign.” Winter’s words got fans going crazy over the possibility of more Bill and Ted merchandise. The set is described as a 30th anniversary tribute to the original movie, paying homage to the San Dimas mall where Bill and Ted spend their time. Check out some photos of the Bill and Ted LEGO design, as well as Winter’s tweet, below:
The LEGO assembly would consist of a two story recreation of the mall, with 8 storefronts and 18 mini figures, including some of the many historical figures the two leads encounter along their journey. The design comes from experienced LEGO enthusiast David Pagano, who is also head of Paganomation, a New York-based film production studio. In the proposal, Pagano describes his love for “the upbeat optimism of the characters,” wanting to create something that captures “the capitalistic grandeur that 1980s shopping malls always seemed to evoke.” He is now waiting to see if the idea gets enough crowd support to become an actual set.
It’s interesting to see an older franchise like Bill and Ted pick up steam in the past few years. Although it has always had a special place in many peoples’ hearts, it is undeniable that there has been a recent call from many to revisit the decade that was the 1980s. Whether it be Stranger Things, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, or a range of other projects, fans are screaming for more. This proposal for a new LEGO set only further proves the love for Bill and Ted. The franchise is a favorite for many, who still reminisce about the first time they saw it so many years ago. Combine that with such an iconic toy as LEGO, and you are bound to get some traction. Whether the set will be hitting stores anytime soon is yet to be seen, but there’s no question that fans are eagerly awaiting Bill & Ted Face the Music.
