After nearly 30 years, Bill S. Preston (Alex Winter) and Theodore “Ted” Logan (Keanu Reeves) aren’t the only ones returning in Bill & Ted Face the Music. On their excellent and bogus trips through time and to Hell, respectively, Bill and Ted have crossed paths with a number of colorful characters - some of whom will show up yet again in the long-awaited third entry in the franchise.

In Bill & Ted Face the Music, the eponymous slacker heroes haven’t yet fulfilled their destiny of writing music that will one day save the universe. Instead, they’re middle-aged dads with little hope that they’ll succeed. When a visitor from the future shows up out of nowhere to tell them they have 80 minutes to pull off what they’ve been failing at for 29 years, their new adventure officially kicks off.

The film will introduce some new faces to the franchise - including Kristen Schaal, Anthony Carrigan, Beck Bennet, Samara Weaving, Brigette Lundy-Paine, and Kid Cudi - as well as the first two films’ original screenwriters, Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. That said, the Bill & Ted franchise is no stranger to bringing characters from the past into the present, so it’s only natural that other familiar faces from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey return. Here is every character returning for Bill & Ted Face the Music.

Bill Preston

In Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Bill Preston (Winter) is a slacker who travels through time to help his best friend avoid military school. In Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, he’s a slacker who travels through Hell to bring him and friend back to life. In Bill & Ted Face the Music, he’s a slacker who hasn’t fulfilled quite as many goals as he intended. That said, he’s now the father of Thea (Weaving), and the survival of the universe is still very much up to him and his longtime friend, Ted.

Theodore “Ted” Logan

Were it not for Ted Logan’s (Reeves) failure to pass history class, the time-traveling events of the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure may have never transpired. So, Ted may well have proven that the slacker mentality has its perks. In Bill & Ted Face the Music, Ted is a middle-aged father to Billie who shares his friend Bill’s anxiety about not yet writing their universe-saving music. Incidentally, Bill & Ted Face the Music isn’t the only beloved franchise to which Reeves will be returning; he’s set to star in a fourth Matrix film, due out in 2021.

Death

In Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, Bill and Ted die. It’s a grim beginning to the film, but ultimately the catalyst for the rest of the film. The two travel through Hell and end up meeting Death himself, challenging him to a Seventh Seal-inspired chess match (only, they opt for Battleship instead). Together, they become an unlikely trio. Now, while it’s unclear how exactly Death will fit into the events of Bill & Ted Face the Music, he is technically a member of their band, Wyld Stallyns. So, maybe it’s simply a case of getting the band back together.

Captain Logan

While the events of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure rely on Ted’s inability to pass history, it extends even further to his father, Captain Logan (Hal Landon Jr.), whose intent to send Ted to military school is what scares the two heroes into taking drastic measures in the first place. It’s unclear whether or not he’s ever come around to supporting his son’s passion for universe-saving music, but he’ll nevertheless show up in Bill & Ted Face the Music.

Missy

Captain Logan’s ex-wife, Missy, is another familiar face making a return in Bill & Ted Face the Music. As fate would have it, Missy left Bill’s dad in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey in exchange for Ted’s dad, Captain Logan, meaning Bill and Ted have had the same stepmother at various points in time. It’s unclear whether or not she and Mr. Logan’s marriage has lasted into 2020; it’s also unclear what her role will ultimately be in the new film.

Princess Joanna

One of two characters who have lived in two very different time periods is Princess Joanna. Royalty from the 15th century, Princess Joanna (played by Diane Franklin in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Sarah Trigger in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey) not only traveled to the future and joined the Wyld Stallyns as a keyboardist, but fell for Bill, ultimately marrying him. She’s being played by Glee’s Gemma Mays in the third film.

Princess Elizabeth

Princess Elizabeth shares a near-identical path to that of Princess Joanna. Both are princesses of the same 15th century kingdom, both leave their time period behind in exchange for present day San Dimas, California, both join the Wyld Stallyns (only, she plays the drums), and both wind up marrying one of the two leads (she marries Ted). Though Elizabeth was played by Kimberly Kates in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Annette Azcuy in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, she’ll be played by Erinn Hayes (Medical Police) in Bill & Ted Face the Music.

Deacon Logan

Originally played by Frazier Bain, Saturday Night Live star Beck Bennett will take over the role of Ted’s younger brother, Deacon. Though the original role was mostly inconsequential to the plot, casting Bennett suggests that there might be more for his character to do in Bill & Ted Face the Music. If he’s anything like his father, there’s a possibility he could end up being something of an antagonist in the film; if he’s anything like his brother, maybe he’ll join the heroes in saving reality.
