Alex Winter makes his first appearance as Old Bill from Bill & Ted Face the Music in a new Walmart Super Bowl ad. Released in 1989, the original Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure sent Winter’s Bill S. Preston, Esq and his fellow rock and roller Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) on a quest through time in order to fulfill their destiny as epic rock stars and the saviors of the world.
Only a modest hit when it was released, the first Bill & Ted adventure nevertheless spawned the sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, which pitted the titular slacker guitar heroes against Death himself. Now, as part of a spate of long-awaited sequels, Bill & Ted Face the Music will bring back Winter and Reeves as their beloved characters, now older but perhaps not wiser, and bringing their daughters Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Thea (Samara Weaving) along on yet another time traveling adventure with nothing less than the fate of humanity at stake.
Early looks at Bill & Ted Face the Music have featured the middle aged versions of Winter and Reeves’ characters along with their young daughters, and have also teased the return of William Sadler as Death (who of course remains Bill and Ted’s slave forever after they defeated him). Now, fans can get their first look at Winter’s Old Bill in action thanks to a new Walmart Super Bowl ad that is absolutely stuffed to the gills with figures from pop culture of the ’80s and ’90s. The world’s busiest and most action packed Walmart grocery pick-up area is already being visited by Flash Gordon, LEGO men and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story when “Future Bill” beams in via the iconic time traveling phone booth from the original movies. Future Bill is greeted by his past self, also played by Winter, who indeed informs him that he’s now in the present. The Bills then get their order, which includes a case of Bud Light, from an awe-struck Walmart worker and celebrate with an “Excellent!” and a little air guitar. Reeves’ Ted is unfortunately absent from the spot (no doubt Reeves’ asking price is a little higher right now than Winter’s.).
After the Bills make their excellent cameo, the chaotic spot goes on to feature appearances by a whole array of cinematic aliens, including the Martians from Mars Attacks!, several characters from Men in Black, the aliens from Arrival and finally even C-3PO and R2-D2. The ad indeed ups the ante on last year’s Walmart Super Bowl spot which featured famous movie vehicles including the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the family truckster from National Lampoon’s Vacation and Ghostbusters’ Ecto-1.
It’s dizzyingly fun keeping up with all the movie cameos in the new ad, but Future Bill’s appearance is undoubtedly the highlight, and should only add to fans’ excitement leading up to the release of the highly anticipated and sure to be excellent Bill & Ted Face the Music.
