Two generations of Wyld Stallyns meet in a new image from Bill & Ted Face The Music. The hotly anticipated third film in the Bill & Ted series has long been in the works and has had more than its fair share of ups and downs along the way. But now at last, the wait won’t be much longer.
Beginning in 1989, the time-travelling franchise kicked off with Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The film introduced the world not only to its heavy metal stoner-protagonists Ted Theodore Logan (Keanu Reeves) and Bill S. Preston Esquire (Alex Winter), but it also gave the career of Reeves the initial boost needed to turn him into a household name. Initially envisioned as a simple and fun take on the time travel genre, Excellent Adventure turned out to be a sizeable hit. As a result of how well the characters and overall tone of the film resonated with audiences, a sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, found its way to theaters in 1991. The film was generally well received, though it failed to come close to equaling the box office receipts of its predecessor. In the 30-plus year gap between Bogus Journey and the announcement of Bill & Ted 3, much has changed. Reeves has reached the aforementioned household name status, comedian George Carlin, who played Rufus, has passed away, and cinema in general has changed a great deal.
Regardless of the amount of time that has passed and the changes that have occurred along the way, fans of the franchise couldn’t be more pleased to know that a third film is on its way. Much effort has gone into getting the film off the ground and there were certainly times along the way where it looked as though there wouldn’t be a third installment at all. But little by little there has been encouraging moments, and since Face the Music finished shooting late last summer, fans have been eager for even the slightest glimpse at what’s in store. The latest look at the film comes courtesy Face the Music’s writer, Ed Solomon, who posted an image from the film on his Twitter account. The image of Bill and Ted as well as their daughters Thea (Samara Weaving) and Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine) can be seen below:
In addition to the image, Solomon also responded to a fan’s Tweet asking when we might be seeing a trailer for the upcoming film. Solomon revealed that there is still some effects work to be done, meaning that the first trailer will likely arrive at some point this spring. That Tweet is also available below:
Judging by the provided image, Bill and Ted appear to have passed on their musical genes to their respective daughters. Unlike their fathers, however, Thea and Billie’s musical tastes appear to lie in more modern pursuits. In fact, the two girls look appear almost dismissive of what might be their fathers’ out-of-touch reactions to their music. It has previously been revealed that this time around, Thea and Billie join their fathers on their quest in Bill & Ted 3 to save the universe, which will likely mean that the teens will have to endure Bill and Ted’s band, The Wyld Stallyns.
Whether Thea and Billie are fans of their fathers’ music or not remains to be seen, but the generational gap that the film offers will mirror that of its audience as well. Plenty of fans came of age watching Bill and Ted travel through space and time and now a new generation of potential fans will be able to experience the franchise next summer with their parents. That alone is something truly remarkable for a film that wasn’t expected to reach much more than a small, niche audience so long ago.
