Star Wars’ Billy Dee Williams and Adam Sandler shared a moment on Twitter, bonding over Sandler’s very familiar looking outfit from Uncut Gems. Sandler’s performance in Uncut Gems is already being hailed as his greatest to date. Although Oscar nominations aren’t set to be announced until tomorrow morning, his performance has been at the forefront of movie-goers’ brains. The film, directed by Josh and Bennie Safdie, centers on Sandler’s character Howard Ratner, an eccentric jeweler in New York City who’s heading down a greedy, self-destructive path of gambling as he searches for his next big score. The film has been a hit among critics, currently sitting at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, with many raving about Sandler’s powerful turn as Ratner.
Uncut Gems opened wide in theaters on Christmas Day, going up against the likes of Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, Walt Disney Animation’s Frozen 2, and Lucasfilm’s highly anticipated saga-ender Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Despite the competition, Uncut Gems proved to be the little indie that could, setting a box office record for the film’s distributor, A24. It quickly surpassed Ari Aster’s unsettling horror film Midsommar to become the studio’s biggest five-day launch to date and one of the studio’s highest-grossing movies ever. This, obviously, bodes well for the thriller as Oscar season kicks into high gear, but it looks like critics aren’t the only ones expressing love for the Safdie Brother’s latest project.
Lando Calrissian himself, Billy Dee Williams, took to Twitter to share a fun comparison between his beloved Star Wars character and Sandler’s chaotic Manhatten jeweler. The actor shared a side-by-side photo of the two characters who appear to be wearing strikingly similar outfits. In the photo, the two actors are both wearing a yellow shirt with a dark-colored collar paired with a dark jacket. Williams happily tagged Sandler in the photo, calling them “Two Uncut Gems” to which Sandler responded with “who doesn’t want to be you Billy Dee?”
Williams first appeared in a galaxy far, far, away in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and recently reprised the role of Lando for J.J. Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker. This was his first step back into the Star Wars universe since The Return of the Jedi, making for an exciting appearance in the Skywalker Saga’s final installment. Since Disney had acquired Lucasfilm back in 2012, Williams was noticeably absent from the franchise’s feature films, with Donald Glover only portraying a young version of Lando in Solo. Thankfully, Williams came back for Abrams’ saga-ender and his appearance was one that fans adored, even if the film itself received mixed reactions.
This sweet interaction between Sandler and Williams on Twitter shows that, no matter if a movie is independent or a monumental blockbuster, there’s enjoyment to be had with every movie-going experience. The Rise of Skywalker may have taken over the box office when it debuted, but the Safdie Brother’s gambling thriller still managed to make an impact. Williams’ tweet also helps in further spreading the word about Uncut Gems, which is all the more helpful as Oscar season is coming up on the horizon.
