The developer of Biomutant released a rare statement on February 19th, 2020 to assure fans that the game is indeed still in development. Experiment 101, the studio in charge of Biomutant, originally announced the open-world game back in 2017, but information about the title has been scarce since. This update marks a reassuring change for fans waiting to play with the game’s many promised features.
Biomutant was planned to be what the creators call an “open world, post-apocalyptic kung-fu fable” for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. A key component to the promised gameplay was the ability to exchange various biological and cybernetic additions on a player’s character to give them a broad range of powers, from telekinesis to giant claws.
Players can read the full heartfelt message on Experiment 101’s Biomutant Twitter account below, but the studio does not give any details on when to expect the game at this time. Originally, Biomutant was planned to be released in 2018 or possibly 2019, with reports that it’s been in the finishing stages for years. This latest report ends with a promise that, “We will reveal the release date as soon as everyone at our studio feels confident about hitting that date and that the game is ready for it.” Experiment 101 directly addressed those fans most looking forward to Biomutant, saying, “We are doing everything we can to make this the best game all of us have ever worked on, and that it will be as entertaining and great as we can possibly make it.” However, the studio then pointed out that, “The work involved in finishing a game is long, challenging, and unpredictable. The sheer magnitude, size, and length of Biomutant adds to said effort.”
While it’s not clear what’s stalling the game right now, besides from the sheer breadth of features the developers have promised, there are some intriguing leaks which suggest a Biomutant release may not be too far off. Smaller retailers, including Shopto and Instant Gaming, accidentally put up a March 17, 2020 release date for the game, fueling speculation that it may be closer to completion than fans thought. Other online sellers have mentioned a general 2020 release date for the game, but with no other information.
However, there’s a thorn in any plans for an upcoming release date for Biomutant, namely that new consoles are just around the corner. Even the game’s Twitter account still says it’s being made for PS4 and the Xbox One, but those consoles are about to become quickly obsolete with the introduction of the PS5 and whatever Microsoft ends up calling the Xbox Series X. Perhaps much of the work the studio is doing now is to make the game more suitable for the next generation of consoles. If so, a 2020 release date for Biomutant may be difficult to make, but more announcements should be forthcoming soon.
