Margot Robbie’s long-awaited come back as Harley Quinn is finally here, and we are not disappointed. The acclaimed actress rocked the new bangs and the numerous colorful and glittery outfits in the movie. The movie gave the world a fan, a distinct new girl gang filled with unique female characters from the clown princess to the anti-hero Helena Bertinelli to the young and quiet Cassandra Cain.
Birds Of Prey was released in theaters only earlier this month, and we already can’t wait for the sequel. Here are 5 characters from the comics who we think should join the next Birds of Prey movie, and 5 characters who shouldn’t.
Should: Batgirl
When DC announced a Birds Of Prey movie, comic book fans were surprised to hear that Barbara Gordon was not going to make an appearance as she is the leader of this team in the DC comics. Whether as Oracle or as Batgirl, Barbara would be a great addition to the team.
Trained by her father and by Batman to develop detective skills and become a superhero, she is almost exactly the opposite of Harley Quinn. The two of them interacting and trying to work together would promise some fun and hilarious scenes.
Shouldn’t: Starling
Starling is not a famous DC comics character. She temporarily joined the Birds of Prey during the New 52, alongside Black Canary, Batgirl and Katana, but she was not your usual Bird of Prey. She had a lot of secrets, and her loyalties were unclear, but most of all - she was a pretty random addition to the team. She didn’t exactly bring anything new, Huntress already has her coolness and badassery and Batgirl her leadership skills.
Although she is an interesting character, it would simply not make sense for her to be in the DCEU; there are so many other, more relevant characters to be portrayed instead.
Should: Poison Ivy
Since Suicide Squad, fans have been dying for Margot Robbie’s Harley to meet her Poison Ivy. Together, the villains are partners in crimes, and often lovers. Poison Ivy is known for being Harley’s closest friend and generally deemed a much better love interest for Harley than the Joker, who is highly abusive.
At one point, fans were even vouching for Jessica Chastain to play the character. Considering how much the villain is loved and expected to join Harley on screen, it would be crazy for the DCEU not to introduce Poison Ivy.
Shouldn’t: Dove
With a costume that is as cheesy and tacky as her superhero name, Dove is far from being one of DC’s most memorable characters. In the comics, Dove is inseparable from her brother, Hawk, which also means that the two of them would have to join the Birds of Prey sequel, and there are much more interesting and relevant characters that could take their place instead.
The two of them joined the birds of prey pre-New 52, fighting alongside Black Canary, Lady Blackhawk, Huntress, and Oracle but the latter superheroes were the real attraction of the comics.
Should: Catwoman
Despite being one of the most popular female comic book characters, Catwoman has yet to appear in a DCEU film. In the comics, she is part of the Gotham City Sirens with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, therefore it would make sense for her to join her friend in a Birds Of Prey sequel. As a very independent individual - even when with the sirens, she sometimes goes off on her own - Selina Kyle would be the type of person to team up with the birds for one mission, but go back to her previous life afterward.
In the meantime, Zoe Kravitz will be playing Catwoman alongside Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the new Batman movie.
Shouldn’t: Katana
If there’s anything we’ve learned about Katana’s character in Suicide Squad, it’s that she’s a lone wolf. She can fight alongside other fighters, but she doesn’t exactly mix well with other people.
She doesn’t talk much, and when she does, half of the time it’s only to threaten someone. Despite being around the Suicide Squad at all times, she makes it very clear that she’s not like them because she’s not a thief. In addition, she didn’t exactly get along with Harley Quinn, even though the two of them are the only girls on the team.
Should: Savant
Savant would be a great villain for the Birds of Prey sequel. He is a selfish and spoiled millionaire from Gotham whose genius and memory problems make him a real challenge to the Birds Of Prey. In the comics, he went after Black Canary and Oracle in an attempt to discover Batman’s real identity, and the two women had to enlist the help of Huntress in order to defeat him.
The fact that he is not completely villainous also makes his character stand out: at times his selfishness and greed lead him to commit horrible crimes, but at other times he and the Birds of Prey have a common enemy whom they destroy with each other’s help.
Shouldn’t: Mr. Freeze
Most superheroes and villains can successfully be brought to the big screen, while others simply work better as part of comic books than of movies or TV shows. This is the case with Mr. Freeze, whose name and ice-based weapon prevents him from being taken very seriously. With Harley Quinn as the protagonist of Birds of Prey, there is not much room for another unrealistic character.
In addition, whether Mr. Freeze were to be Harley’s enemy or her friend, the audience would never see the end of the clown princess’ puns, and we’ve already had enough of those in Batman And Robin.
Should: Lady Blackhawk
Lady Blackhawk is arguably one of the most underrated DC superheroes. She last appeared in the birds of prey comics pre-New 52 a while ago. The superhero name has been taken on by three different women in various comics, the most one being Zinda Blake. Beloved by fans and unique, the character deserves to be brought to the big screen.
She is badass, funny and uses a gun - a weapon which distinguishes her from the other team members. In the comics, she was also close friends with Dinah Lance, and it would thus be exciting to watch the two of them together in a Birds of Prey sequel.
Shouldn’t: The Riddler
After Jim Carrey’s comical and over-the-top performance in the low-rated Batman Forever, a more serious and realistic approach to the character would be interesting. Although The Riddler and Harley Quinn are often friends, sometimes even allies in the comics, it would make more sense for the villain to appear in the Batman movies.
The Riddler is famous for the many confusing clues that he leaves for Batman to find, as he enjoys engaging in enigmas with someone as intelligent as him. Therefore, his potential as an unusual villain who is not evil would be wasted if he were to appears in a Birds Of Prey movie.
