Birds of Prey has been in the works since the Suicide Squad premiered back in 2016. Fans were impressed with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and of course, DC saw an opportunity.
The film will be released in February on the 7th this year and fans are anticipating how much they will truly enjoy this female empowerment movie. Harley has a new crew, she’s dumped her toxic man and 2020 is going to be her year. If she can survive villain Black Mask and avoid cuffing season altogether.
The Cast Is Great - Yay!
Like them or not, the cast will be coming to a movie theatre near you. The women who team up with Harley are Huntress played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Black Canary played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Renee Montoya played by Rosie Perez.
This cast is rounded out by Ewan McGregor (Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s boyfriend in real life) who plays Black Mask, Chris Messina who plays Black Mask’s right-hand man, and Ali Wong but it is not known yet who she will be playing. The cast is pretty great this should indicate an entertaining film.
More Harley, Less Puddin’ - Yay!
Many fans speculated that Joker, and not just any Joker, but Jared Leto’s Joker would make an appearance in this film. It makes total sense Harley Quinn’s whole storyline in Suicide Squad was her tying to get back to her man. They most likely planned on continuing to commit crimes and acting crazy.
Fortunately, it doesn’t look like he will be in the film at all not even in flashbacks. The film’s original title was Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. This should indicate that she is taking this free woman thing to a whole new level.
The Posters Are Eye-Catching - Yay!
Keeping up with the colorful, kookiness of Harley Quinn herself, the posters depict what we can all expect. A fun, exciting film. If you haven’t seen these posters, well, you are missing out. The colors shine like a rainbow and the designer even managed to incorporate all of the main cast members. They look as though they are floating around a gigantic Harley Quinn head. Harley herself is a little more colorful as she is trying to turn a new leaf after her devastating breakup with Mistah.
Overall, the posters and all the promos have given off a cheery vibe but we can imagine there isn’t anything too happy about this film.
Writer/Director - Yay!
This film may be a hit for the simple fact that the writer and the director are both females. Hollywood has had a hard time letting women push past basic roles in the film industry. It is especially hard for them to allow a woman let alone two to step up to the plate with a comic book film.
It’s unfortunate that we have to have a party every time a female is attached to a big-budget project. Nonetheless, here we are anticipating this film with women attached in key roles behind the camera and a cast that screams female empowerment.
Cassandra Cain - Yay!
Surprise, Cassandra Cain is making an appearance in this film. Unfortunately, she isn’t Batgirl (well, not yet) but who knows what the future holds. She is actually playing Harley Quinn’s assistant of sorts. We will call her a sidekick, maybe a girl that Harley has tried to force into a friendship with all her co-dependency issues. She is being played by actress Ella Jay Basco. Cassandra tags along for Harley’s adventure but she supposedly comes into her own.
Hmm, maybe Batgirl will make an appearance in this film after all. It messes up a few timelines from the animated movies but, we’ll see.
Another Man Trying To Control Women - Boo
From the looks of the trailer, Black Mask played by Ewan McGregor looks to be trying to own Harley in a way. In the trailer, he is depicted as being intrigued by Harley. We can only assume this is going to create a storyline where it is all about Harley trying to break free from another guy.
Or better yet, trying to find a new love and falling for yet, another crappy guy. Low-key we are hoping that if she does fall for him it is only because she needs to use him for a bigger plan. Unfortunately, Black Mask isn’t the type to get used, especially by women.
We May Learn How To Get Over A Breakup - Boo
Since the movie is about Harley coming into her own after her break up with Joker we can only assume we will receive some crucial life lessons from Ms. Quinn. Harley is dealing with her break up from Mr. J and it is a hard one for her. She was completely obsessed with this man (did you see Suicide Squad?) and she is a little off her rocker because of it so it will certainly be interesting to see what we come out of the theatre learning about what we can do to get over our own toxic ex.
Whether we abide by those rules is a whole other discussion. Should we even be taking post break up advice form Harley? Yes, she was a doctor at one point but, look at her now.
Has The Same Look As Suicide Squad - Boo
We aren’t sure if this look is just for the trailer to grab people’s attention. You know bright colors and beautiful women kicking butt. We sure hope it is though. Suicide Squad was a disappointment for many fans and if something was a disappointment you don’t model another film after it. Let this film be its own, have its own story.
This means changing everything right down to the cinematography. This film had a high budget, so it’s not like the movie needed to watch how much money they used. Making this a Harley-focused film was the right move but in doing that, give Harley her own swag.
Barbara Gordon Gets Shafted - Boo
The original creator of the comic book version of Birds of Prey was Barbara Gordon. She was a Batgirl, well the original Batgirl. In the DC Extended Universe film The Killing Joker, Barbara is shot by Joker and becomes paralyzed from the waist down. She never regains the use of her legs. Instead, she becomes the Oracle someone who is in the know.
She has all the gossip and what’s going to happen next. She creates the team to help her fight the crime she can no longer fight herself. It would have been kind of cool to include her in that sense. Maybe they will we will have to wait and see.
“Insight Into Harley’s Word” - Boo
Margot Robbie has been bragging about her girl Harley Quinn since she was learned about her when she accepted the role in Suicide Squad. She is very enthusiastic about this upcoming film. She wants fans to know that this film will be a deep dive into Harley. “The story in Birds of Prey is told from her point of view, so you have an insight into Harley’s world in a way that you didn’t in the first Suicide Squad film, nor that you’ll have in the next Suicide Squad film.” Robbie later went on to say what we can expect from the film. “It’s poppy, it’s fun, it’s violent, it’s crazy. It’s absurd. It’s kooky. It’s hilarious. It’s a little heartbreaking”
That is a lot of emotions, even for Harley. We hope it isn’t too “poppy” we would love to see some serious action.
