New character posters for Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) offer closer looks at the film’s leading ladies and villains. Hot on the heels of new footage being shown at Brazil’s CCXP, Warner Bros. has unleashed the new posters to further hype up the film ahead of its February 2020 release. Fresh off her breakup with the Joker, Harley (Margot Robbie) is looking to reinvent herself and find a new place in life when she meets superheroes Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) as they try to protect a young girl (Ella Jay Basco) from the villainous Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor).
Birds of Prey comes at a time when the DC film brand is reinventing itself. While taking steps to move away from a shared universe setup with Joker and The Batman, Birds of Prey still exists within the initial DC Extended Universe through Robbie’s presence after her role in 2016’s Suicide Squad. She will also appear in James Gunn’s sequel/reboot The Suicide Squad.
The Birds of Prey Twitter account unveiled the posters ahead of the film’s CCXP panel, which featured all of the female leads and director Cathy Yan. Check them out in the space below:
Harley’s look in Birds of Prey is a noticeable departure from her appearance in Suicide Squad. This look is more carefree, hinting at the freedom she feels now that she’s separated from the Joker. The first trailer showed her cutting her hair as an act of defiance, and the new poster further suggests she’s happy with how her life has changed. In addition to showing the other Birds of Prey on their own posters, the two villains of the film, Roman Sionis and Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina) are given closer looks. The trailer only offered quick glimpses of Victor, so this is fans’ first proper look at the sadistic killer.
The marketing materials for Birds of Prey continue to showcase it as a female-empowerment movie with the ladies all striking action poses in these posters. The cartoon-y vibe may put off some people, but it fits with the tone already established in previous posters and images. All of the posters also feature several strange details, like a beaver in a tutu on Cassandra’s (likely to be Harley’s Bernie the Beaver from the comics) and a couch sinking underwater on Harley’s. It’s unclear if those details have anything to do with the film, but they certainly add to the quirky vibe Birds of Prey is striving for.
