A new TV spot for the Harley Quinn-focused Birds of Prey film was released during The Game Awards earlier this evening, showing off a few brief shots of Harley herself hijacking the video game awards show before starting the trailer proper. Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn stands as a curious entry in DC Comic’s film franchise history, being one of the few upcoming films following a character from the Suicide Squad movie.
Starring Margot Robbie and said to show a more personal side of Harley Quinn, Birds of Prey is banking on viewers becoming invested with a more introspective version of Suicide Squad’s maniacal former therapist. According to the actress herself, Robbie has wanted to explore Harley Quinn’s roots from the very beginning of her time portraying the character, and a new TV spot which aired during the 2019 Game Awards shows off a little bit more of Harley’s mentality in Birds of Prey, although it doesn’t feature much of the doctor herself.
Posted to YouTube by SpottinGames and embedded below, this newest teaser video for Birds of Prey shows Harley as the host of a fictional television show, claiming to have taken over the live feed of The Game Awards in a bit of meta-humor commentary, before quickly jumping in and showing off the professional teaser. The video showcases Harley Quinn’s leadership skills while also showing off some quick new shots of the upcoming Birds of Prey film, although Harley herself is mainly relegated to the role of narrator and the teaser instead focuses on new characters like Huntress and Black Canary.
Set to Mr. Sandman, originally recorded by The Chordettes, and intercut with violent scenes which indicate some sort of prison breakout, this new Birds of Prey TV spot sees Harley apparently giving life advice to Huntress, Black Canary, and other members of her all-woman team. She tells them to “Blow something up,” and to “hit someone,” saying nothing is better for getting a guy’s attention than violence, referencing Harley Quinn’s unhealthy relationship with the Joker, a duality which has been present in the character since her original inception.
With upcoming films like James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman 1984, and Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn, DC has clearly taken public opinion to heart regarding the way they should both market and produce movies in their cinematic universe moving forward. Harley Quinn seems like the perfect character to focus a film around, and hopefully Birds of Prey will continue the cinematic upswing that Aquaman and Shazam started, leading all of the DC universe films into a bright new future.
