Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’s official soundtrack listing is now released and it has a subtle nod to Harley Quinn and Joker’s break-up. In a few weeks, Warner Bros. will roll out their next DCEU entry that will feature some of DC’s female anti-heroes. Directed by Cathy Yan, it will see the return of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn since fans last saw her in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad from 2016. This time, however, she gets her own team with Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bett as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cass, and Rosie Perez as Renee.
Specific plot details for Birds of Prey are still being kept under wraps, although it’s been confirmed that the heroines will go up against Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask - the film’s primary antagonist, as well as Chris Messina’s Victor Zsasz. As its release nears, the marketing machine for the movie is slowly heating up with Warner Bros. rolling out fans’ latest look on the much-anticipated flick with a new trailer that gave the public a better understanding about what’s going on in its narrative. This followed with the debut of its official soundtrack which features a string of artists and one noticeable detail that could be a nod to Harley and Joker’s split.
As one of the artists who worked on the album, Charlotte Lawrence shared the official Birds of Prey The Album listing, confirming other artists who contributed to it like Doja Cat, Cyn, Halsey and Summer Walker among others. Lawrence’s song, however, pops out thanks to its title - “Joke’s On You” which many believes is a reference to Joker and his subsequent split with Harley which will be tackled in the film. Warner Bros., meanwhile, took it to their official Instagram account to release the cover for the movie album soundtrack. Check out the images below:
It’s difficult to gauge what’s the real meaning behind the song at this point, however, considering that the latest Birds of Prey trailer started with Harley right up addressing what’s the score between him and Mr. J. It’s worth noting that after this film, she’ll team-up with a different gang in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad set to release on 2021. Most of the characters from Ayer’s film will not be partaking in the new one, including Leto’s Crime Prince of Clown, and it’s confirmed that he also won’t have anything to do in Birds of Prey. There’s no official word yet, but between that and the resounding success that is Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker film, there’s a chance that fans may have already seen the last of Leto’s version.
The question is, how will the DCEU address Joker’s absence moving forward. Admittedly, there’s no urgency to tackle this, but it won’t hurt either to get it out of the way. Harley’s re-emergence in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will pose some questions regarding the status of their relationship, and as the trailer suggests, the pair is officially over. This way, the narrative can focus on Harley’s developing kinship with his new team as they go up against Black Mask.
