A new image from Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) seems to suggest that Harley Quinn and the Joker will be split up in the film. Birds of Prey brings back Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who first appeared in the 2016 film Suicide Squad.
With the filming for Birds of Prey beginning last month, it was only a matter of time before more information about the film was released. This week specifically was a good week for fans as Harley Quinn’s new look for the film was released, along with a short 19-second long teaser that gave fans a first look at the other characters in the film, like Huntress, Black Mask, Montoya, Cain, and Zsasz. Another look at a new outfit for Harley Quinn came the following day, and now another group of set photos seem to hint at story details for Birds of Prey.
Posted on Twitter by ~Oracle, three new set photos from Birds of Prey reveal that Harley Quinn and The Joker might actually be broken up in the film. The photos show Harley in her new outfit opening up something in tin foil, but the most interesting details are the tattoos on her thighs. As pointed out by Ryan_Platts, one of Harley’s tattoos reads “Harley + Puddin,” with “Puddin” crossed out.
Ever since the character’s first appearance in 1992 in Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn has had a unique look. When her character was adapted in 2016 for Suicide Squad, her character went through a radical design change, while still including elements from her comic book appearances. It was once believed that Birds of Prey would include a non-tattooed Harley Quinn, but that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore.
Harley Quinn and The Joker had a not-so-healthy relationship in Suicide Squad, and the film ended with The Joker breaking her out of prison. These new set photos not only hint that The Joker and Harley are split up in Birds of Prey, but also indicate that the film will indeed be a part of the shared universe that includes films like Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the aforementioned Suicide Squad. These photos also hint at the meaning of the title of the movie, as it appears that Harley Quinn has been emancipated in a sense from The Joker. Regardless of the exact meaning, fans will find out for sure if The Joker and Harley are together when Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) hits theaters next year.
