Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)‘s title character seemingly has her eye on a Bat-shaped rebound after finally ditching the Joker. Margot Robbie made her debut as Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and her character was widely considered the strongest aspect of the entire movie by some distance. Capitalizing on that popularity, 2020 marks Harley’s return alongside some of Gotham’s finest female fighters in Birds of Prey. The ragtag group will be forced together after being individually targeted by Ewan McGregor’s sadistic crime boss, Black Mask, who acts as the story’s prime antagonist.

With the footage and details released so far, it’s abundantly clear that Birds of Prey is designed as a distinctly unique offering. As well as being the DCEU’s first R-rated affair, there’s a deliberately over-the-top, flamboyant and quirky tone befitting of Quinn’s personality. As such, Quinn’s adventures in Birds of Prey will encompass the chaotic and scatterbrained nature of her character and the recent trailer highlights several typically crazy Quinn moments, including drowning her sorrows in Easy Cheese, powering-up with cocaine and using exaggerated disguises to commit crimes. In another random moment, Cassandra Cain finds that Harley has adopted a pet hyena, and is treating it like a puppy.

The most interesting thing about the hyena, however, isn’t where it came from, but what Harley decides to name him. In the Birds of Prey trailer, Harley says, “I named him Bruce after that hunky Wayne guy.” On the surface, this appears to be a fan-pleasing reference to Gotham City’s Batman, the very figure Birds of Prey’s world and characters can be traced back to. But the hyena actually represents a key trait of Harley Quinn’s character history in a subtly flipped way.

When Harley Quinn debuted in Batman: The Animated Series, and then later when she turned up in the DC comics, there’s an interesting dynamic where, despite being romantically obsessed with the Joker, Harley also harbors an explicit attraction to Batman after watching the Caped Crusader and her puddin’ come to blows. She steals several kisses off the vigilante and makes comments about his appearance, usually in appreciation for showing Harley kinder treatment than Mr. J does, but the latent chemistry never boils over into anything more.

Birds of Prey toys with Harley Quinn’s established Batman attraction, but instead of having the hots for the Dark Knight, she’s clearly cast a lustful eye over Gotham City’s billionaire playboy, Bruce Wayne. This is an interesting play on a specific character trait, especially because it’s not entirely clear whether or not Harley knows Batman’s secret identity in the DCEU. Harley does help Joker find out Bruce’s superhero alter ego in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, so Robbie wouldn’t be the first version of the character to learn Gotham’s biggest secret. Assuming Batman’s secret identity remains unknown, however, it’s interesting that Harley still has a physical attraction to the character, even without his mask.

The other big question is what version of Bruce Wayne Harley thinks is a hunk. As part of the DCEU (and following his cameo in Suicide Squad), it would make sense that Ben Affleck is still the Bruce Wayne of Birds of Prey. But with Affleck no longer attached to the franchise and The Batman with Robert Pattinson on the way in 2021, Harley could be talking about a totally different Bruce.
