The official trailer for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is here, but what song plays over the footage? In 2016, Margot Robbie made her debut as live-action Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. While the film overall was critically panned, Robbie’s portrayal of Harley was frequently cited as one of the movie’s strongest parts and she became an instant fan-favorite. Unsurprisingly, Warner Bros. was eager to bring the character back, and pushed multiple Harley-related projects into development. Birds of Prey, from director Cathy Yan, is the one that won out and is set for a February 2020 release.

WB got the Birds of Prey marketing campaign off to a start earlier this year with a theater-only teaser attached to screenings of IT Chapter Two. It offered moviegoers a small taste of what to expect, but fans were left waiting for a more proper look at the upcoming film. Today, the full Birds of Prey trailer arrived, setting the stage for a DC movie unlike any other. The studio’s marketing team chose a rather interesting song to serve as the soundtrack.

The Birds of Prey trailer is set to the tune “Hyme à l’amour” by Edith Piaf. In English, the song title translates to “The Hymn to Love.” It was released in 1950, one year after Piaf’s lover, boxer Marcel Cerdan (who Piaf wrote the song for) died in a plane crash. You can listen to it in the space below:

Looking over the English translation of the lyrics, this song looks like it was chosen for ironic reasons. In it, Piaf expresses her feelings by saying she will do anything her lover asks of you and that none of the world’s problems matter because she’s in love. If that sounds familiar, it’s because that mentality basically sums up Harley in Suicide Squad; she was mad about the Joker and obsessed with being by his side. But in Birds of Prey, she’s celebrating her freedom from what was an incredibly toxic relationship, and looking to help others in Gotham find their own emancipation. Using any Edith Piaf song in a film or trailer is always a nice touch and helps give off a classy vibe, but this one in particular is especially rich given how it relates to the Harley character and contrasts her current mindset. Her breakup with the Joker is going to be a driving force of the narrative, and it looks like it’ll be a treat to watch the next stage of her evolution.

Sonically, “Hyme à l’amour” is a far cry from “Heads Will Roll,” the energetic and bouncy Yeah Yeah Yeahs song that was the soundtrack for the theater-exclusive teaser in September. Still, its use in the full trailer fits the general Birds of Prey marketing strategy, as the campaign so far has gone to great lengths to show how this is much different in spirit and tone than previous DC movies. The juxtaposition of Piaf’s traditional love song with the colorful, comic book visuals of the movie give the trailer a personality - much like the posters did before. All in all, Birds of Prey looks like it will be an exciting, fresh installment in the DCEU.
