The director of photography for Black Adam wants to reshape what a comic book movie is. Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and set to release in 2021, Black Adam is being directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and has already been confirmed to be the first introduction of The Justice Society of America into DC’s cinematic universe.

A number of rumors have surrounded the announcement of the upcoming Black Adam movie, including one which suggests Henry Cavill might return as Superman for the film and another, likely spurned on by the actor himself, which says Kevin Hart will be in Black Adam. Although fans of the character’s comic book iteration may be expecting the DC character Shazam to make an appearance, the film’s creators have already confirmed this longtime arch-rival of Black Adam will not be appearing in this particular film, although the door is open for the two characters meeting in the future.

Now, according to an interview with Cinemablend, fans know the director of photography for Black Adam is looking to take things in a new direction with The Rock’s upcoming anti-hero theatrical debut. Speaking candidly about the film industry, Black Adam’s DP Lawrence Sher asked “Can we continue to sort of reshape what a comic book movie is? Like yes of course you want it to be entertaining and it has to make a decent amount of money so it can’t live in such a fringe place that it doesn’t bring people in, but can we do something inventive? So that’s the goal…”

It’s worth noting Sher was also the cinematographer for the highly-successful recent DC film Joker, a movie which garnered much recognition thanks to many of it’s iconic shots and locations. While not the first comic book movie to lean into a grittier and more realistic aesthetic, Joker was able to do so in a way which felt both realistic and cinematic, leading to one of its most memorable scenes being reenacted multiple times by tourists and film fans much to the dismay of the real-world location’s residents.

While fans still do not have much information regarding the plot or direction of the Black Adam movie, save for the fact The Rock would like to make the character less of a villain and more of an anti-hero, hopefully the news that Joker cinematographer Lawrence Sher is dedicating to moving the comic book genre forward instead of backward will set their minds a little more at ease. Although eager fans still don’t know which role Kevin Hart could play, or even what the film itself could be about, anticipation of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam film is certainly cooking.
