With Peter Parker and Mary Jane back together at last, more than a few fans were shocked to find “The Wedding of Spider-Man and Black Cat” gracing the cover of the burglar’s Black Cat Annual #1. Sure, Mary Jane is off in Hollywood, but even for a hero and villain with Spider-Man and Black Cat’s romantic history, marriage seems to be jumping the gun.

Thankfully, the wedding finally makes sense, now that the first official preview of the issue has been released by Marvel Comics. While it’s impossible to say that Peter Parker and Felicia Hardy will NEVER wind up together, this much is certain: this wedding doesn’t seem to be intended for them. And once they’re locked away after the ceremony, they’ll be doing anything but conventional wedding night escapades.

The official explanation is offered up by Felicia herself, explaining how she and Peter have wound up involved in a feud within what appears to be the Maggia crime family. But does that make it more or less dangerous than a superhero wedding? That remains to be seen.

You can’t argue that this explanation makes the wedding of Peter and Felicia make perfect sense, even if their mission is going to be sending them into a dangerous crypt. All in a day’s work for heroes and cat burglars, we suppose. Read on below for the preview pages:

In order to understand what comes next, you need to know this: The Maggia are weird. “But Felicia,” you say, “They’re just your run-of-the-mill gangsters with esoteric traditions and a fixation on death rays and robots! How is that weird?” Take the wedding of the martyrs. When two families have beef, bad blood bordering on war, then the martyrs are wed. Two Maggia youth, a prince or princess of each family, are brought together on this sacred occasion. At St. Nicholas Church, science-gangster holy ground. They’re wed, in ancient Maggia tradition, bound together by oath and law. They’re reminded of their duty to their family. Of tradition. Of what’s expected of them. And then the priest opens the door that only he can… ushers the martyrs through… and everyone waits… while the newlyweds fight to the death to settle their families’ differences.
