Black Lightning star, Cress Williams has confirmed that his hero will appear in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover, Crisis on Infinite Earths. Crossovers have become a recurring thing as the Arrowverse continues to expand to include more shows, like Supergirl, which even though it first premiered on CBS instead of The CW, soon became a part of the Arrowverse. Black Lightning, however, wasn’t considered a part of the Arrowverse even though it aired on The CW from the very start. With Crisis on Infinite Earths, though, it seems that might be changing.
Named for an equally momentous event from DC Comics, the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths is expected to radically change the landscape of the many inter-connected CW superhero shows. For starters, the series which began it all, Arrow, is ending with season 8, and it’s thought that the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths will impact how the show wraps up. Additionally, the crossover is set to introduce different versions of characters - like the Kingdom Come version of Superman played by Brandon Routh - and may even see Supergirl’s universe combine with that of Flash and the Legends, bringing to an end the Arrowverse’s multiverse. With the news that Black Lightning is also joining in on the crossover, it’s possible that whatever universe this show exists in will also be folded into the Arrowverse.
Originally reported by FandomWire, the actor who plays the titular hero on Black Lightning, Cress Williams has taken to Twitter and Instagram to confirm his involvement in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Sharing a screenshot of the report, Williams adds “You asked for it… you got it!!!,” which is presumably in response to calls from Black Lightning fans for the character to officially join the Arrowverse, just as Supergirl did previously.
In their original report, FandomWire notes that Black Lightning’s role in Crisis on Infinite Earths will be a small part, similar to how Ruby Rose’s Batwoman was implemented in Elseworlds. That crossover is how Batwoman was introduced to the Arrowverse, so it makes sense for Crisis on Infinite Earths to do the same for Black Lightning. Yet, with many details still unknown about the crossover, it’s tough to say exactly what Black Lightning will do and at what point he’ll show up in Crisis on Infinite Earths.
One thing we do know about the upcoming crossover, however, is that it will begin with some of the Arrowverse’s parallel universes being destroyed. With that being the case, it’s possible Black Lightning’s universe is one that doesn’t make it, and with his universe destroyed, the characters from Black Lightning may need to flee to the Arrowverse’s main universe in order to survive. No matter what it is that draws Black Lightning into the Arrowverse, fans are sure hoping he sticks around.
