Marvel Studios offered D23 Expo attendees a new look at next year’s solo movie Black Widow, and the footage revealed David Harbour’s Red Guardian in his full costume. The first part of the footage was the same as what was shown at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, but then new footage revealed Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff running through a forest, and riding a motorcycle through Budapest.
Harbour then joins Natasha and Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena Belova, looking a little disheveled - like he just got out of prison. He tells the other two (in a Russian accent), “Family, back together again,” and puts on his Red Guardian costume. Once reunited, the “family” are shown in action, fighting a group of people. There’s banter between the two women as Yelena asks why Natasha always does “the pose, the fighting pose” and calls her “a total poser.”
The end of the footage shows Black Widow wearing an all-white costume designed for a snowy environment and fighting Taskmaster. The movie’s villain is in full costume with a mask, so unfortunately we still don’t know who’s playing him (or her). The footage was preceded by a special message from the cast, with Johansson wearing the same all-white outfit. Black Widow is still filming, so neither the cast nor director Cate Shortland could attend D23 in person.
Harbour’s Red Guardian a.k.a. Alexei Shostakov was actually married to Black Widow in the comics, and given the mysterious nature of Natasha’s background it’s not out of the question that they might have been married in the MCU as well. Like Black Widow, Red Guardian doesn’t have any superpowers, but he is highly trained in combat and carries a shield similar to Captain America’s. There’s a reason for that; in the comics, Red Guardian was essentially created as Soviet Russia’s answer to Captain America.
Black Widow marks the start of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans at D23 cheered when the footage opened with the location marker of Budapest; Black Widow’s adventures in Budapest have been the subject of speculation ever since Nat mused in The Avengers, “It’s like Budapest all over again” - to which Hawkeye responded, “You and I remember Budapest very differently.” Needless to say, there’s also been plenty of speculation that Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye will make a surprise appearance in Black Widow - especially if the Budapest scenes are part of a flashback.
