A new featurette for Marvel’s Black Widow makes the movie’s delay part of the marketing. Directed by Cate Shortland, the highly anticipated superhero film marks the first solo outing for Scarlett Johansson’s character Natasha Romanoff. Set between the events in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, the story centers on Natasha as she confronts her past with the Red Room program that trained her to be an assassin. Alongside Johansson, Florence Pugh plays another Black Widow from Natasha’s program named Yelena, Rachel Weisz plays a Black Widow named Melina Vostokoff, and David Harbour plays Alexei Shostakov, otherwise known as Red Guardian.

The first trailer for Black Widow dropped back in December and gave eagerly awaiting fans a glimpse at all of these characters in action. Not only did viewers get to see Natasha go toe-to-toe with Yelena, along with Harbour suited up as Red Guardian, but the trailer also showed off a few glimpses of the movie’s villain, Taskmaster. More recently, a special look at the film that dropped during last night’s Clemson/LSU game offered up even more footage of the copycat villain in a one-on-one fight with Natasha. The exciting clip sparked a world of theories and speculation, showing how thrilled Marvel fans are to finally see Natasha’s 10-years-in-the-making solo film. And now, a recently released featurette explores why excitement for Black Widow’s movie has maintained for so long.

The featurette, released by Marvel Entertainment, starts off with Johansson back in 2009, filming her character’s debut in Iron Man 2. She goes on to explain how Black Widow is “multi-layered and motivated and determined,” explaining that she’d love to take her character in “every different direction.” President of Marvel Studios and producer on the film, Kevin Feige, then pops up in a present-day clip to explain how Black Widow is the one movie that fans have been asking Marvel to make “more so than any other film.” It’s clear that Johansson’s passion for the character, coupled with fans’ want to see more of her, helped bring Black Widow to life. Check out the full clip below.

Shortland’s film will mark Marvel’s first steps into Phase 4 of their cinematic universe. Although it’s exploring a specific time in the past, it will still set up a future for the MCU while also properly closing the book on Johansson’s Black Widow. It’s currently unclear as to how Black Widow will set up future Marvel films, but many fans guessed that Pugh’s Yelena would be carrying the mantle after Johansson. Unfortunately, Pugh was quick to squash that rumor, saying that she will not be the MCU’s new Black Widow.

With only a few months to go before its release, details have largely been kept a secret about the film’s plot and what fans can expect. Regardless, it’s clear that Black Widow has become one of the year’s most anticipated films. One of the many reasons for this is that it’s exciting to finally see this character, who has interested Marvel fans for 10 years, in her own movie. Natasha has been an intriguing character to many, and Black Widow will surely be an action-packed venture that’ll be worth the wait.
