The filming for Marvel’s upcoming Black Widow has reportedly been delayed until June. Scarlett Johansson first appeared as Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow, in Iron Man 2 in 2010, but has since appeared in several entries of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Black Widow last appeared (and survived) in Avengers: Infinity War and her first solo movie is seemingly moving forward.
Fans have been asking for a solo Black Widow movie for years now, but things really started to move forward for the film last year. Marvel apparently met with over 65 directors for Black Widow, before choosing Cate Shortland to helm the project. Not much is known about the story of the movie, but it is rumored that Marvel is considering giving Black Widow an R-rating. The film is thought to be aiming for a 2020 release date with filming beginning at the end of February, but it looks like the plans may have changed.
Black Widow could still potentially be released in 2020, but according to Film Magazine’s Production Weekly section (via Pursue News), the start of filming has been pushed back to June. Black Widow is listed as starting principal photography in June in the UK and then wrapping production sometime in September. This news seems to confirm the filming location in the UK as revealed in earlier reports, but also reveals that the film might have a delay in production.
While Black Widow will be released after Avengers: Endgame, a Black Widow movie doesn’t necessarily mean that Romanoff will survive the events of Avengers: Endgame. It is completely possible that Black Widow will be an origin story. It is rumored that Black Widow might even share connections with the upcoming Captain Marvel since Jac Schaeffer is involved with both films. Regardless of when Black Widow actually starts filming, the film will likely pull people to the theaters for Marvel.
In the past few years, there has been a surge in interest for both female directors and female-led casts, ala Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot with Wonder Woman. Fans have been waiting a long time for a Black Widow solo movie, but it is probably better to delay production if need be instead of rushing the film. As of right now, Johansson is the only actresses attached to the project, which could be the reason for the delay. Despite the delay, more updates surrounding Black Widow are likely to be revealed in the coming months as filming inches closer.
