Marvel Studios’ Black Widow may have its first new cast member with Fighting With My Family’s Florence Pugh in talks to join. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently seeing the success that can be had with a female-led movie as Captain Marvel continues to dominate the box office. The Brie Larson solo movie is the first for a woman in the MCU, but it won’t be the last.
Next up for Marvel Studios appears to be the long awaited solo film for Scarlett Johansson’s popular assassin. Johansson debuted as Natasha Romanoff back in 2010’s Iron Man 2 and has become a prominent member of the MCU in the years that followed, but it’s only now that progress is being made on giving her a movie all her own. Black Widow will be directed by Cate Shortland based on a script by Captain Marvel’s Jac Schaeffer, and several recent reports indicated casting was picking up.
Now thanks to a report by THR, it looks like it’ll be Florence Pugh who’s the first co-star for Johansson in Black Widow. Pugh received great acclaim for her role in Lady Macbeth in 2016, and returned to period dramas last year with Outlaw King on Netflix. She most recently starred in the biopic Fighting With My Family, but will now join her biggest project yet with Black Widow. There’s not many details on her character currently available, other than being “a spy on the same level” as Romanoff.
The addition of Pugh is the latest development for Black Widow, but one that’s been on the horizon. Pugh was previously among a group of candidates for the second female lead role that surfaced online. At that time, it was reported that Emma Watson was the front runner, but it’ll be the 23-year-old rising star who takes the coveted role instead. Unfortunately, the vague spy description does not offer any additional insights into what character from Marvel Comics she could possibly be playing - although Yelena Belova is one possibility.
As long as Pugh’s deal for Black Widow closes, the casting process for the film will now turn to some of the other roles reportedly available. Marvel’s said to be interested in André Holland for the main villain role, and also may be eyeing Rachel Weisz and Alec Baldwin for a pair of Americans. In addition to these roles, a recent rewrite of the script reportedly added another female part to the film, so Marvel will also need to fill this role. While we’ll have to wait and see who else joins, Black Widow’s cast is off to a strong start with Johansson and Pugh leading the way.
