A fresh batch of Black Widow character posters offer closer looks at Natasha Romanoff’s (Scarlett Johansson) Russian family and indicates she won’t be the only hero in the film. Arriving in theaters this May, Black Widow is the long-awaited solo film for the one-time assassin and kicks off the MCU’s Phase Four. Black Widow follows Natasha as she returns to her roots and confronts her past in the Red Room, bringing her back into the lives of the people she once considered family: Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), and Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour).

Black Widow arrives just as the MCU enters its post-Infinity Saga phase. While Natasha tragically died in Avengers: Endgame, her solo adventure is a prequel set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. During Sunday night’s Super Bowl, Marvel released a short TV spot for Black Widow alongside the new character posters.

Marvel Studios released five posters in all, one for each of Black Widow’s main characters and one that brings them together. It’s common practice nowadays for big movies to release posters for each of their main characters, and the fact that Natasha’s old allies all scored posters of their own suggest they will play vital roles in her story. Of course, the trailers supported that theory already, but this truly solidifies it. Check them out below:

The fifth poster bringing the individual ones together show that the backgrounds of each form Natasha’s trademark hourglass symbol. This sends the message that this old pseudo-family is stronger together and is capable of great things when they are united. Revisiting her past will surely be difficult for Natasha, and having her family by her side might help. There are a lot of mysteries to be uncovered in Natasha’s past, and fans hope Black Widow will answer some of the questions they have about their favorite spy’s backstory.

While their comic book backstories are already known, not much has been revealed about the roles Yelena, Melina, and Alexei will play in Black Widow. Yelena has already been referred to as Natasha’s younger sister, and Alexei is known in the comics as a sort of Russian Captain America. As for Melina, an emoji on Twitter seems to suggest she might have a more nefarious role than initially shown. One thing seems certain though: Melina won’t be the person behind villain Taskmaster’s mask. Taskmaster has appeared in every trailer for Black Widow so far, but his true face has not been seen. He didn’t get a poster either, further adding to the mystery behind his identity. With several more months to go before Black Widow’s release, there’s plenty of time for more information to come out.
