Every studio is looking to get a piece of the comic book movie pie, as films based on superheroes and other comic properties have had a meteoric rise in popularity during the past decade. Along with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Fox has X-Men, Warner Bros. has all things DC, and Sony is working with Marvel Studios to bring Spider-Man into the MCU.
Like many other studios, Sony is interested in creating its own connected cinematic universe. While plans to launch one built around a certain friendly neighborhood Spider-Man have been put on hold for the time being, the studio has slowly begun turning its attention to Valiant Comics’ untapped lineup of characters. The studio has set its sights on Bloodshot to launch this potential universe – and it now the upcoming film has a new director.
While speaking at Emerald City Comic-Con (via Bleeding Cool), the film’s screenwriter Eric Heisserer and head of Valiant Entertainment Dinesha Shamdasani revealed the news that Avengers: Age of Ultron visual effects creative supervisor Dave Wilson is now attached to direct the film, replacing John Wick co-directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. The two were previously attached to the adaptation; however, with Leitch and Stahelski’s schedules growing increasingly busy, Sony appears to have brought Wilson on to expedite the film’s production schedule.
This will be Wilson’s first theatrical release. As mentioned above, he is a longtime visual effects supervisor with Blur and began crafting his directorial talents by doing promotional trailers for a number of video games. While working with Blur, he worked on the aforementioned Avengers: Age of Ultron and Deadpool.
With Bloodshot being a character that most audience members are unfamiliar with, it will be interesting to see how Wilson and Sony approach the film. Bloodshot is the ultimate soldier, meaning he could draw comparisons to Deadpool and Wolverine in many ways. Hopefully with Wilson now on board, he and Heisserer can figure out a unique way to bring this character to life and deliver as different a viewing an experience as audiences have experienced with smaller films like Deadpool, Logan, or even Kingsman: The Secret Service.
Even though the Bloodshot film adaptation does not currently have a release date, Shamdasani said Valiant and Sony are hopeful that finding a director like Wilson means a better timeline for the title will be announced later this year, along with a firm release date.
