Bluepoint Games is working on something big for the upcoming PlayStation 5. The PS5’s release date was revealed earlier today to be sometime during Holiday Season 2020, with rumors of backwards compatibility and super-fast loading times dominating much of the news surrounding the console, which will also include a new PS5 controller featuring haptic feedback.
Long-time partners with Sony, Bluepoint Games’ first ever game Blast Factor was released in 2006 alongside the debut of the PlayStation 3 and was one of the console’s first downloadable titles. Although usually responsible for ports and remasters of other developer’s franchises, such as the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and the PS4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus, Bluepoint also helped to create the original PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.
According to a report by Wired detailing some of the PlayStation 5’s upcoming features, Marco Thrush, the president of Bluepoint Games, said his company is currently working on a game for the PS5. Thrush spoke excitedly about the potentials available due to the console’s solid-state drive, saying “You don’t need to do gameplay hacks anymore to artificially slow players down.” Bluepoint’s president recalled how games on cartridges, which didn’t have to take extra time pulling information off of discs, allowed game worlds to load instantly. “We’re kind of getting back to what consoles used to be,” he said.
Bluepoint Games isn’t the only company excited about solid state drives in next-gen consoles, with Crytek also recently voicing support for their inclusion. Although Thrush did not say which project Bluepoint Games was currently developing for the PlayStation 5, he called it “a big one.” With rumors of a PS5-exclusive PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 2 currently in circulation and given Bluepoint’s past involvement with the franchise, perhaps players will once again soon be pitting Jak and Daxter against Parappa the Rapper after all, or maybe Bluepoint is working on another massive HD re-release of an entire franchise like they did with Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection on the PS4.
With so many developers on board and the added benefit of being able to transfer saves between console generations thanks to cloud support, the next round of consoles are beginning to look better and better every day. While players may have a little longer to wait in order to find out just what Bluepoint Games is currently working on, it’s quite likely that, whatever the game (or games) may be, it will debut as a launch title for the PlayStation 5 when the console releases next year.
