Each year, the American Institute of Architects highlights just a few carefully considered spaces to win its Interior Architecture Awards. Each project selected is deemed an innovative and spectacular interior space that makes a mark on the places we live and work. For 2019, New York City’s Apple Upper East Side has been awarded, adding to store’s impressive list of design accolades.
Apple Upper East Side first opened in June 2015 and continues a long legacy of Apple’s historic preservation work in New York City. The store structure was originally built in 1922 as the U.S. Mortgage & Trust building. Earlier adaptive reuse Apple stores including SoHo, West 14th Street, and Grand Central set a precedent of classic architecture blending with technology.
At Madison Avenue and 74th Street, Apple and architecture group Bohlin Cywinski Jackson collaborated to preserve and recreate many of the Mortgage & Trust building’s intricate details. Marble, plaster molding, and original chandelier designs were brought back to life thanks to the use of original photographs and blueprints. This dedication to historical accuracy and architectural precision is what helped the project secure 2019’s award. According to BCJ:
Apple Upper East Side is no stranger to design honors. Past awards include:
- The Preservation League of New York State, Excellence in Historic Preservation Award, 2016
- AIA California Council, Merit Award, Architecture, 2016
- AIA New York State, Adaptive Reuse/Historic Preservation Design House, 2016
- AIA San Francisco, Special Commendation Award, Historic Preservation, 2017
Joining Apple’s space in the AIA’s 2019 Interior Architecture showcase are the Hyundai Capital Convention Hall, LA’s New United States Courthouse, and San Francisco’s Studio Dental II, among others. Last year, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson took home an Interior Architecture Award for Square’s new headquarters. BCJ design principal Karl Backus offered thoughts on 2019’s achievement:
Outside of historic preservation, the Upper East Side store also became the first to offer new fixtures that foreshadowed Apple’s current retail design language. Avenue shelving and interactive displays featuring Beats headphones and carefully arranged accessories were used throughout the store months before rolling out elsewhere. In addition to six other stores in New York City, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson continues to collaborate with Apple on recent projects like 2018’s Apple Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, California.
