BoJack Horseman season 6 is streaming on Netflix, but can fans expect a season 7 of the show, and if so what will its story be? Created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, BoJack Horseman has developed into one of Netflix’s best original series, mixing genius animation and an array of hilarious gags alongside a serious discussion of a variety of topics, including mental health and substance abuse.
Starring Will Arnett in the titular role, the show also has an enviable voice cast and long list of guest stars, from series regulars like Aaron Paul and Alison Brie to one-offs such as Daniel Radcliffe.BoJack Horseman season 6 has continued the show’s great run of form, picking up after season 5 took him to seemingly his lowest point yet. The difference this time is the episodes have been split into two halves; season 6, part 1 dropped on Netflix back in October 2019, with BoJack Horseman season 6, part 2 then arriving on January 31, 2020.
The 16 episodes together make for BoJack Horseman’s longest season yet, but what does the future hold for the series beyond the end of this run? Fans of BoJack Horseman shouldn’t get their hopes up when it comes to looking ahead to BoJack Horseman season 7.
BoJack Horseman Season 6 Is The End
Unfortunately, as it stands, there won’t be a BoJack Horseman season 7, with season 6 the definitive ending of the show. That’s a big part of the reason why BoJack Horseman season 6 has been split into two parts, to ensure that it gets the send-off it deserves. Season 6, episode 16, then, serves as a planned series finale for the show, which nicely ties off the major character arcs in a way that feels satisfying, although is just about open enough to suggest there could be more if it was ever wanted, but again, there are no plans for BoJack Horseman season 7 right now.
Netflix Cancelled BoJack Horseman Before Season 6 Released
When it was announced that BoJack Horseman season 6 was to be the end, there was initially some confusion as to whether or not Netflix had cancelled the series, with conflicting statements from various members of the cast and crew. Later, however, Raphael Bob-Waksberg confirmed that Netflix cancelled BoJack Horseman, albeit with enough notice that they could write and animate a proper ending to the series. Netflix cancels a number of shows after 2-3 seasons these days, so the fact that BoJack got six seasons is impressive, but also shows how much the streaming service has changed in recent years.
What BoJack Horseman Season 7’s Story Could Be
Warning! Contains SPOILERS for BoJack Horseman’s series finale.
When confirming the cancellation, Bob-Waksberg noted that he felt the show could have continued on for a couple more years. Obviously he changed plans to deliver a true ending, but nonetheless there’s still room for more after BoJack Horseman’s series finale. In the last episode, BoJack survives after almost drowning in his pool, and although still serving a jail sentence he’s ready to get his life back on track for good. There’s hope for his future, and BoJack Horseman season 7 could show us what becomes of his life with a fresh start.
Likewise, there are some big changes for other characters. Diane marries Guy and moves to Houston; Todd moves in with his girlfriend, Maude; Princess Carolyn marries Judah, and is setting up her own production company; Mr Peanutbutter is, well, largely still just Mr Peanutbutter, but has also seen the end of his relationship with Pickles. There are various threads to follow there, and no doubt plenty of difficulties to overcome, in a theoretical BoJack Horseman season 7. However, the ending that’s delivered is one that gives satisfying closure to these characters, so that season 7 is better left to the imagination.
