Will Arnett, voice of Bojack Horseman and NBA superstar Stephen Curry are working on a new comedy series together. This marks an unusual collaboration between the two. The new series may be Arnett’s closest work to basketball since appearing in the 2008 film Semi-Pro.
Steph Curry is no stranger to television production. Just this year, he appeared on and executive produced ABC’s golf-game show Holey Moley. Curry, an avid golfer himself, used the show to continue to grow his considerable brand off the basketball court. Will Arnett on the other hand, has most recently appeared as the voice of the title character in Bojack Horseman. The October release of Bojack episodes marked just the first half of the show’s final season, with the second half coming January 31, 2020. Since its debut, Bojack has grown to become one of the best reviewed shows on TV. But ironically enough, Bojack recently took a jab at major sports teams in season 6.
The news of Arnett and Curry teaming up comes from Variety. The working title of the project is The Second Half, and the premise is very much inspired by Curry’s real life. The show will follow a retired NBA player who returns home and tries to mend relationships with those he left behind. The Fox ordered series will be a multi-camera comedy, akin to the likes of Seinfeld.
There are several similarities to the concept of the show and the background of Steph Curry. Some of them are obvious, like the protagonist being a retired NBA player. Not only is Curry an NBA player, but his brother is, too, and their father was. The setting of the show will be Charlotte, which is Curry’s hometown. It’s no doubt that there’s some personal stake for Curry in The Second Half. It will be exciting to see just how involved he will be in production.
As strange as this team-up sounds, it’s actually pretty normal for TV standards. Curry is clearly making a push into producing, seeing how busy he’s been in the industry in the last couple of years. This project in particular seems like it could be a major leap forward. Curry is clearly looking to expand his interests during the second half of his NBA career, similarly to Lebron James. Curry is so busy, in fact, that he turned down a cameo role in Lebron’s Space Jam 2. As for Arnett, he’s a seasoned veteran when it comes to TV production. Throughout his career, Arnett has been nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards, including one for Best Animated Program in 2019 for Bojack Horseman.
