Gearbox has revealed the Borderlands 3 Valentines Day event details, but perhaps more exciting for fans is the fact that an upcoming update will feature a level cap increase. Borderlands 3 has grown quite a lot since it was initially released, and things like the Rare Chest Riches event and a Halloween spectacular, which might have gone on a bit too long, as well as multiple offerings of DLC content has given fans a lot of extra hours worth of playtime, and Valentines Day 2020 will give Borderlands 3 players another opportunity to blow up bandits for fun and (more) profit.
Borderlands 3 has a bit of a murky history with DLC offerings. Halloween’s Borderlands 3 Bloody Harvest event introduced new mechanics and legendary weapons to the game, but the Fear mechanic dropped on seemingly everything and there was no way to opt-out of the event for players who wanted normal guns. Nevertheless, it was a fun distraction for players, who spent the time looping between regular mobs and Captain Haunt. The Valentines Day event seems to aim to provide players with the opportunity to have fun without shoving an at-times unwanted mechanic down their throats.
Recently, Gearbox announced via its website that Borderlands 3 Broken Hearts Day will launch when the February update goes live and will last, unlike Bloody Harvest’s more than a month-long presence, for a week. Players’ dinosaur buddy Maurice will return for the event, which will also feature little floating hearts above enemies’ heads. Shooting the hearts will give players new skins, trinkets, the “Terminal Polyaimorous” or “Wedding Invitation” legendary weapons, and more. Enemies might even be won over to players’ sides - by love, of course - and fight for them. Players can also entirely opt-out of Broken Hearts Day from the main menu - a merciful release which was overwhelmingly begged for during the seemingly never-ending Halloween event. Online games, of course, will use the host player’s settings.
In a Community Love Letter, Gearbox shared some details on upcoming changes to the game. These include True Takedown Mode, which will ramp up the difficulty of Takedown missions, popularly-requested skippable cutscenes, the ability to disable guardian rank perks, the highly-anticipated Mayhem 2.0, and improvements to Fight for Your Life. The most interesting bit, however, is the announcement of a level cap increase from 50 to 53. The exact date of this increase has not been announced, but Gearbox refers to it as the “first” level cap increase, which could be an indicator that more are coming.
The Valentines Day event in Borderlands 3, thankfully, seems far less oppressive than the previous Halloween one. The ability to toggle events on and off will be a boon for players who simply aren’t interested or who grow bored with them. Overall, these are very exciting announcements for fans of Borderlands 3, and hopefully the new level cap will allow players to customize their builds even more.
